The ODEON project has officially entered its final phase. Following the presentation of preliminary beta results during its second Review, ODEON’s core components and modules are now undergoing real-world beta testing across pilot sites in Greece, Spain, France, Ireland, and Denmark. This critical phase marks the transition toward final platform validation, business model finalization, and the integration of 20 funded Open Call projects.
Entering the Final Phase: Validation & Market Readiness
As ODEON enters its third and final project period, efforts are focused on refining technical components based on field feedback, finalizing the project’s business plan, and conducting comprehensive evaluation across all use cases.
“During this final period, the project will tackle several key challenges: refining tools based on demonstrator feedback to reach their final stage, finalizing the project’s business plan, and presenting the final evaluation of results,” highlights the project coordination team from ETRA I+D.
A major milestone of this phase is the onboarding of 20 innovative third-party projects selected through the ODEON Open Call. Starting in November, these 20 companies will participate in a intensive 10-month mentoring program led by consortium partners. The projects will leverage ODEON tools and pilot data to develop complementary market solutions, providing a direct, real-world assessment of the ODEON framework.
Technological Milestones: Core Architecture & Module Releases
At the heart of this phase is ODEON’s central innovation: Federated Data and Intelligence Orchestration & Sharing for the Digital Energy Transition. Serving as an interoperable, secure meeting point for energy sector stakeholders, this federated data space allows technical partners and pilot operators to govern and exchange data seamlessly. Alongside the federated architecture, ODEON has released initial versions of its core specialized modules:
- For Distribution System Operators (DSOs): The Flexibility-based Network Management Module and the Network Planning and Reinforcement Assessment Module.
- For Local Energy Communities (LECs): The Community Portfolio Management and Elasticity-based Demand Response (DR) Tool, and the LEC Energy Management and Self-Consumption Optimization App.
- For Prosumers: The Digital Energy Assistant (DEA) App.
Pilot Site Demonstrations and Next Steps
The five European pilot sites have made significant progress in their real-world demonstrations.
In the Greek Pilot Site, situated in Mesogia (the broader metropolitan area of Athens), completed activities include the deployment of submetering devices, identification and purchase of near-edge/edge infrastructure, participant engagement for the B2B/B2C Greek Living Lab, registration on the ODEON Platform, historical data collection, and the establishment of regular data pipelines. Initial testing and user feedback collection have also begun. Planned activities for the next period involve deploying edge-devices, full testing and review of use cases, and adjusting the pilot site based on initial results.
The Spanish site, located in the region of Granada, has successfully deployed and installed assets, integrated asset data into the edge node, collected historical data, and integrated historical and near-real-time data into the ODEON platform. An API was developed to access data from the Escúzar and Fornes communities in near real-time. Dissemination and engagement activities are ongoing. Next steps include organizing the Spanish Living Lab workshops with Prospex-Institute on December 2–3 2026, continuing data integration from Wibeee smart meters and communities, and completing the validation of applications.
In France, the pilot site is being demonstrated in the rural area of Hangest-en-Santerre (Hauts-de-France). Activities done include deploying submetering devices (Building PV, batteries) and edge/near-edge infrastructure (slave and master nodes), along with prosumer kickoff and enrollment. The site established data pipelines for continuous uploads and collected historical data from over 400 points (including MV Feeders and 418 consumers smart meters). Therefore, the initial testing is complete. Upcoming plans involve deploying slave nodes at prosumer sites, establishing real-time data pipelines for all necessary data, managing P2P and VPP Smart contracts based on initial results, maximizing self-consumption between the Capitole and Hangest buildings, and fully testing the use cases.
In the Ireland site, implemented in Aran Island, the team has established Living Labs in Inis Mór, Inis Óirr, and Athlone, hosted information and recruitment campaigns, and set up the AWS Server and CFOAT Platform. Monitoring equipment has been received, historic data uploaded, and initial testing of the DEA App has been conducted. Next steps focus on deploying monitoring equipment to public buildings and homes (pending technical assistance), recruiting additional participants, continuing project updates via social media and newsletters, and conducting full use case testing once deployment is complete.
Finally in the Danish site, located on island of Bornholm, engagement meetings and contract signings have secured 30 participating households, incorporating 23 solar panels, 8 windmills, 14 heat pumps, and 16 EVs. The site has ensured data is flowing to BEOF’s platform. For the next period, the pilot aims to ensure data flows to the ODEON platform before the end of 2026 and plans to host a Living Lab workshop with prosumers before Summer 2027.
These milestones underscore the ODEON consortium’s strong progress and lay a solid foundation for achieving the project’s ultimate objectives. Moving forward, the team is focused on finalizing technical developments, executing the pilot demonstrations, and working closely with the 20 Open Call winners. By continuing to build synergies with other European initiatives and actively participating in major industry conferences, ODEON aims to elevate its digital energy solutions to a robust, market-ready maturity.
