ODEON Project Set to Transform the Green and Digital Energy Transition Across Europe Ecosystem
|
| |
|
Launched in January 2024, the ODEON project (Orchestrated Data and Energy Operations for New energy ecosystems) brings together 34 partners from 13 European countries, with a budget of €22.56 million over four years. Coordinated by ETRA, the project sets out to build a resilient, inclusive, and intelligent energy ecosystem — one that supports the increasing integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and digital technologies while empowering energy users at every level.
During this period, the consortium has been actively involved in defining the business scenarios and the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The MVP incorporates key concepts for how the project’s solution addresses data management, processing, sharing, analytics, and resource orchestration. It also focuses on innovative data-driven energy services designed for Prosumers, Distribution System Operators (DSOs), and Local Energy Communities (LECs).
In alignment with this groundwork, pilot sites located in the Island of Bornholm (Denmark), the Aran Islands (Ireland), Granada (Spain), Hangest-en-Santerre (France), and Mesogia (Greece) have launched their pivotal activities. These efforts provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state at each demonstration site, including grid information, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Edge/Near Edge infrastructure, data management systems, and community assets.
The first year of ODEON has set a strong foundation for the project’s vision of driving the green and digital transformation of the energy sector. |

A Data-Driven, Inclusive Energy Ecosystem
|
| |
|
At its core, ODEON will create a federated mesh of Data, Intelligence, Services, and Market flows, making energy systems smarter, more connected, and more efficient. The project is built around connectivity, interoperability, and data privacy, laying the foundation for a trusted and secure digital energy infrastructure.
ODEON isn’t just about technology — it’s about people. A key focus of the project is on empowering consumers, including vulnerable populations and those with limited digital skills, ensuring they are not left behind in the energy transition. By supporting fair participation in energy markets and protection from rising energy costs, ODEON places citizens at the center of the transition. |

Five Innovations for a Smarter Grid
|
| |
|
To drive its mission forward, ODEON delivers five key innovations:
- A Federated Energy Data Space to connect all actors in the energy value chain.
- Use of AI and Edge Computing for better efficiency and grid resilience.
- Tools for cost reduction and increased autonomy for Local Energy Communities and aggregators.
- Transparent, tailored marketplaces for prosumers.
- Reinforced cybersecurity and circularity, reducing the digital sector's environmental footprint.

Testing in Real-World Conditions
|
| |
|
ODEON’s innovation doesn’t stay in the lab. Five large-scale demonstration sites are already being developed across Greece, Spain, Denmark, Ireland, and France. These sites will test the solutions under a wide range of climatic, geographic, and socio-economic conditions, ensuring scalability and replicability across the EU. |
| |
|
Toward a Resilient, Decarbonised Future
|
| |
|
By combining cloud-edge computing, AI, and citizen engagement, ODEON aims to drive decarbonisation, resilience, and digital innovation in the energy system. The project not only enhances grid management and flexibility but also supports the creation of a new economy around energy data exchange, promoting trust, transparency, and collaboration across the value chain.
As the green and digital transition accelerates, ODEON is leading the way — building a more connected, efficient, and inclusive energy future for all. |

ODEON Project’s Inaugural Plenary Meeting on the Aran Islands
|
| |
|
In an idyllic setting on the Aran Islands off the coast of Ireland, the ODEON project consortium convened for its inaugural Plenary Meeting between April 23rd and 24th. Hosted by Comharchumann Fuinnimh Oileáin Árann Teo (Aran Islands Energy Co-Op), this gathering represented a key moment in the project’s pursuit of federated data and intelligence orchestration and sharing for the Digital Energy Transition.
The meeting was a hive of activity, with participants focusing on advancing key aspects essential for the project’s success. Discussions revolved around requirements, technical design, use cases, stakeholder engagement, dissemination, and communication, among other critical topics. Through productive sessions and collaborative exchanges, partners worked towards aligning their efforts and strategies to maximise impact.
Beyond the meeting agenda, partners had the privilege of immersing themselves in the rich history and natural beauty of the Aran Islands. A visit to the historic Dún Aonghasa fort provided insights into the island’s cultural heritage, while delving into the Irish pilot site offered firsthand experience of the project’s objectives in action.
The demonstration activities on the Aran Islands are proving to be highly promising. With access to data from over 800 prosumers and a wealth of community-wide Distributed Energy Resources (DER) – ranging from Photovoltaics and Wind Generators to Batteries and Electric Vehicles (EVs) – the project is on the cusp of a groundbreaking integration. This data, combined with sub-metering data from flexible assets like heat pumps, small batteries, and EVs, will pave the way for innovative solutions in sustainable energy management. |
