ODEON Launches Innovative Network Planning Module for Flexible and Resilient Grids

This month, ODEON partners from ICCS in Greece and EPL in Cyprus launched a new initiative focused on the Network Planning and Reinforcement Assessment Module, which is part of the ODEON Energy Services for DSOs tool. This innovative energy application falls under ODEON’s Data and Intelligence Services for Flexible and Resilient Grids, designed to enhance the capabilities of energy distribution system operators (DSOs).

During a productive workshop, the teams explored various strategies for implementing innovative scenarios that will help network planners analyze future requirements. They also discussed how to optimize network planning with a focus on power reliability and quality.

The new module aims to empower DSOs by enhancing their mid- to long-term planning capabilities. It utilizes advanced algorithms for power network planning that assess reliability, performance, and power quality. This will allow for optimal planning and sizing of network assets under various scenarios, such as new demand connections, the integration of renewable energy sources (RES), battery storage, and electric vehicle (EV) penetration.

The algorithms will integrate comprehensive data from various sources, including SCADA systems, long-term demand and generation forecasts, anticipated EV and RES penetration statistics, and demographic information from public statistics portals. This data will enable the module to:

  • Generate alternative long-term network evolution scenarios (1-5 years or more).
  • Conduct transient analysis and evaluate power quality and reliability metrics in specific segments of the distribution grid.
  • Identify necessary grid reinforcement actions and assess the required investments.
