Harnessing GenAI for Smarter, More Efficient Energy Grids: ODEON’s Insights from EU Workshop

The ODEON project recently participated in the “Opportunities and Challenges of GenAI for Energy Grids” workshop, held in Brussels on September 20th. The event was organized by the Directorate-General for Communications Networks, Content and Technology and the Directorate-General for Energy of the European Commission. The workshop aimed to explore the transformative potential of AI in the energy sector, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges related to AI and Generative AI (GenAI) technologies. Topics discussed included grid-edge orchestration, real-world use cases, and the regulatory landscape.

At the workshop, ODEON shared its vision in alignment with these objectives, focusing on how its Federated Energy Data Spaces, along with services powered by smart data and AIOps, can play a crucial role in improving data processing in energy grids. Participants learned about ODEON’s development of a highly reliable and secure federated data management framework for the energy value chain, enabling advanced data sharing and intelligence services. The project aims to meet key requirements such as performance, low latency, security, resource utilization, and energy efficiency through using DataOps and AIOps techniques.

The session also addressed emerging challenges in the energy sector that require innovative digital solutions. These include the need for increased observability and controllability of grids, better forecasting of energy production from distributed energy resources, and seamless integration across different operators to actively manage energy systems. Organizers emphasized how AI tools, combined with decentralized edge intelligence, are crucial for scaling energy applications and accelerating efficiency and productivity across the grid.
