ODEON’s First Year: Building the Foundation for a Green and Digital Energy Ecosystem

ODEON is making remarkable progress. In its initial year, the consortium has successfully laid the groundwork for the project by finalizing the use cases, requirements, workflows, and dataflows. These foundational elements form the basis for integrating the project’s four layers: data, intelligence, services, and market-level enablers. Together, these layers will lead to the development of a comprehensive solution enabling the digital and green transformation of the energy ecosystem.

During this period, the consortium has been actively involved in defining the business scenarios and the Minimum Viable Product (MVP). The MVP incorporates key concepts for how the project’s solution addresses data management, processing, sharing, analytics, and resource orchestration. It also focuses on innovative data-driven energy services designed for Prosumers, Distribution System Operators (DSOs), and Local Energy Communities (LECs).

In alignment with this groundwork, pilot sites located in the Island of Bornholm (Denmark), the Aran Islands (Ireland), Granada (Spain), Hangest-en-Santerre (France), and Mesogia (Greece) have launched their pivotal activities. These efforts provide a comprehensive understanding of the current state at each demonstration site, including grid information, Renewable Energy Sources (RES), Edge/Near Edge infrastructure, data management systems, and community assets.

The first year of ODEON has set a strong foundation for the project’s vision of driving the green and digital transformation of the energy sector.

ODEON Living Lab Workshop in Ireland: Empowering Energy Communities

From October 15-17, the ODEON Living Lab workshops took place on the Aran Islands (Inis Óirr and Inis Mór) and in Athlone, central Ireland, engaging 24 participants including local consumers, prosumers, and industry stakeholders. The sessions,
hosted by CFOAT (
Comharchumann Fuinnimh Oileáin Árann Teo (Aran Islands Energy Co-Op) and designed/facilitated by Prospex Institute vzw,  focused on energy independence, digital literacy, and policy needs for sustainable energy solutions. Participants voiced concerns about rising costs and emphasized the potential of renewable energy, local storage, and energy sharing. Discussions highlighted the need for user-friendly digital tools and better sector collaboration.

Next steps include participant recruitment, feedback analysis, and strategic planning for future workshops.

Exploring AI Automation and Optimization: Insights from Technical Discussions

The recent activity brought together industry and academic leaders of ODEON to explore three critical dimensions of AI automation and optimization: AIOps, DataOps, and Federated Learning. These interconnected paradigms are shaping the future of artificial intelligence by addressing efficiency, scalability, and data privacy challenges.

During the tailored technical discussions, participants from EVIDEN, Tecnalia, and UPC collaborated to identify and refine key use cases within these three paradigms: Independent central deployment, Independent central training and Federated Learning.
